another year…

before this year ends, i’m still trying to debate with myself on whether i had great year or not. as i looked back of the things that happened to me this year, the only thing that stands out are my two vacations. why my vacations only? i guess i am more happier when i’m not stressed out and the fact that i’m with families and friends.

vacation # 1: trip to orlando, florida in august – this was the first (and i mean first) time that the whole family went on a family vacation. had a bit of a problem in the end due to hurricane irene hitting the nyc area but all in all, we all had fun. the kids enjoyed it. wanted to do it again next year – which i do hope happens.

vacation # 2: trip back to the philippines in october – okay, this is not my first time going back home. the only difference this time is that i actually traveled – either with my cousin and her family who is also visiting from england or with my bestfriend. i visited places that i only read during my younger years. went to davao, cebu, boracay, bohol, batangas, and went on a side tour to singapore - all of that in three weeks. yes, it sounds very tiring but to be honest, it wasn’t that bad since i enjoyed every single trip.

so based on these two events that happened this year, i think i had a good year. whatcha think??

oh I hope they like it...

it's12:13 am right now, December 25th. I would normally be in bed right now sleeping waiting for the morning to come so that all of us can open our gifts. But one of my nephew wanted to open his gift exactly at midnight.

I would not normally agree to this arrangement but he basically wanted to open one gift....the one coming from me. I for one was not confident enough to admit if he or any of his cousins would like their gifts from me. Kids nowadays are very picky when it comes to toys. They either want an iPad, iPhone, laptop, or something really expensive. And I am talking about kids here, not teenagers. I can't imagine what would they want when they are actually teenagers....I don't even want to think about it.

Back to my story. So as soon as the clock hits midnight, my nephew went to the Christmas tree and looked for his gift. He thought I took it and hide it at first but then he found in between two gifts. He opened the gift and when he saw what I bought for him, he smiled and said to me, I knew it. I believe I saw a smile somewhere. Then he went upstairs to get ready for bed.

One down, four more kids (2 nieces and 2 nephews) more to go. I just hope that they like what I bought***. If not, I told them to give it to me and I would play with it.

***just a side note as to why I am so concerned. About 2-3 years ago, instead of buying toys for the kids, I gave them clothes. I figured their parents would buy them toys so i would be the practical one. Oh what a big mistake it was. You should have seen the reaction on their faces. Pure disappointment. Lesson learned from that point on.

presenting the 2011 christmas tree...

even though i was not feeling well and have pink eyes (yes...on both), i went out early saturday morning to buy the family christmas tree. i'm the designated person in the family to buy the tree every year.

this year my sister and i decided to go with rust and gold as the color motif. originally it was silver or glass but after seeing this style on one of the store, we both agree that it was a good combination.

now, i need to start buying holiday presents....

so innocent and adorable…

one of the perks of taking public transportation is that you see adorable stuff every now and then...like today on my way home.

i saw this kid (about 1-2 years old) who saw a baby close to him started to cry (mind you that they are not from the same family). anyway, the kid said something to his mom. i thought he was asking for a snack but it was a toy crane in the mom’s bag. as soon as the mom gave the toy to him, the kid adjusted his seat and made sure that the baby who was crying noticed him. the kid pressed together the leg of the toy crane and the top half of the body started spinning. the kid was trying to amuse the baby so that he won’t cry - which actually worked.

although it was a very short episode – the kid and the mom had to get off – it actually made me feel good...even up to now. just thinking about it makes me smile.

it "suits" me alright...

during my recent back to the philippines, i made sure that i visited kings philip’s tailoring located at glorietta 5. most of the suits that i owned are ready to wear (rtw). problem with it is either the pants fit perfectly & the jacket is off or the other way around. most often than not, it had to be altered which is an added extra cost...oy vey...

anyway, as soon as I walked in, the staff was very friendly. i told them what i want - the style, the color and the fabric. the “maestro” took my measurements, paid everything in full, and left to do some other stuff. i was in and out within 20 minutes.

i only had one fitting which by the way was not needed since it fitted me well perfectly – but i do recommend it since you just never know. i picked up my suit the day of my flight back to the US (i was glad that my flight was at midnight).

moves like jagger...

every time i go back to my homeland (philippines), i tend to have a theme song by the end of the trip. this year was no different. i usually go for the melodramatic love song but surprise surprise. my theme song for this year's trip was the song "moves like jagger" by maroon 5 featuring christina aguilera. don't ask me for the full details but let me say it was a whole lot of dancing until the wee hours of the morning.

thanx to my dearest friends - angel, mikee, and dan. it was a vacation to remember...just like every year.

if the shoes fit...

earlier this month, my sister and i went to our very first new york fashion night out. we noticed that most people are just out to enjoy the event and not buy at all. it’s weird since most store that we went to have good discounts. yes, it is a hassle to be walking around with big bags but c’mon, any discount is a good discount. anyway, one of the things that i bought is this new camper high-top dress shoes (aka mauro). i like camper since they are so comfortable and the quality is really great. this is basically my second camper – the one that I presently own I use only during winter time…question now is, when am i going to start using it?? or should just return it??

look at me...

wow. it’s been a while since i last posted here. just very busy at work i guess. anyway, i’m currently reading a book of one of my favorite author and read something that i though was very profound:

“it is with our faces that we face the world, from the moment of birth to the moment of death. our age and our sex are printed on our faces. our emotions, the open and instinctive emotions which Darwin wrote about, as well as the hidden or repressed ones which Freud wrote about, are displayed on our faces, along with our thoughts and intentions. though we may admire arms and legs, breast and buttocks, it is the face, first and last, which is judged “beautiful” in aesthetic sense. and, crucially, it is by our faces that we can be recognized as individuals. our faces bar the stamp of our experiences and characters; at forty, it is said, a man has the face he deserves.” - The Mind’s Eye by Dr. Oliver Sacks

2012 project...

ever since we bought our house (no more renting thank goodness) back in 2001, i never felt that i should decorate or make my space my own. maybe because i was young back then and decorating was not a priority??? the only decoration that i can admit of ever doing was painting the door frame blood red. why red? let me explain…

when we moved in, everyone decided to take the upper floors. i on the other hand fell in love with the basement. it has two bedrooms (each with small closets), a full bath, a kitchen, and a small living room. my only problem was that it was all white. i get the all white idea since basement tends to be darker but white walls and white tiles for flooring, it was just too much. i needed to add color, hence the red door frame.

10 years later, it still looks the same way the day we moved in. i feel like i needed to do something. i am not concerned about my room since i want that to be my last project. i want to start where everyone tends to hangout out. i know you are thinking the kitchen but you are wrong. i like the kitchen and i am not touching anything there one bit. i was more thinking of the living room. yes, even though it’s a small space, i need to make it inviting. and in order for me to do that, i need to get a good sleeper sofa. why sleeper sofa? although there is an extra bedroom, a sleeper sofa would be very useful if there is more than one guest. you just don’t know when relatives would come for a visit. everything will revolve around the sleeper sofa (i.e. side table/ottoman/lamps, etc). question now is where to get a good, not expensive, yet durable sleeper sofa. here are my options:

sleeper sofa - Umber from Target. cost about $700
henry sleeper from West Elm. cost from $800-$1,200

out of the three, i like the 2nd one. it is small but it is practical especially with the limited space i have. someone suggested ikea to me before but i rejected it. don't get me wrong, i love shopping at ikea but when it comes to furniture, it tends to last only for a year or so.

i need another vacation...

the following pictures basically sums up my most recent vacation experience.

my nephew nicky enjoying the water park at the resort.

vacation nowadays is more about what the kids wants to do. would they enjoy going to a zoo? to the park? or would they just enjoy staying at the pool all day long? although i do not have a kids (yet), i always make sure that i reserve a week where i can take my nieces and nephews on vacation (or anywhere they want to go). this year, the family decided to go to Orlando, FL. most people would assume we would go to Disney or Universal but sorry to say, my nieces and nephews are not a big fan. they just want to stay in the pool and swim all day/night long. we did took sides trips to Clearwater, FL to visit my siblings friends. but since it was close to the beach, the kids didn’t complain (more swimming). when the pools were closed for the night, we went to this amusement park nearby. they love bumper cars. they were not afraid to bump anyone head-on (must be fun for them since i got sick in the end for getting too much hit).

when we got stranded in Atlanta, Georgia (i’ll explain later), the main requirement for the hotel where we’re going to stay is that it must have a swimming pool. stayed there for two nights at two different hotels (and yes, both have swimming pools). we also went to the Georgia aquarium (again, water, water, water). at a certain point, i got tired of being close to the water.

my nieces jo and em at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport, Georgia

due to hurricane irene, our connecting flight from Georgia to New York got cancelled. the closest we can get a flight back to NY was in 7 days. all flights were fully booked within NYC and surrounding areas. train was an option but they were also booked. driving was suggested but 15 hrs of solo driving can be very exhausting (I was already exhausted from the vacation itself). and renting a car will cost me a lot of money – close to what i spent on the vacation itself. don’t even think about taking a bus, done it once and never again. my brother and his family decided to do the 19 hrs road trip – they have two drivers so that was convenient for them.

on the 2nd day of being stranded, we stopped by the airport to check if there was any chance of us getting out. no such luck. but i noticed on the departure screen that they fly to Buffalo, NY. there were spaces for the next day flight and we took it. Buffalo is not close to NYC by any means. it’s approximately 7-8 hrs drive. But that’s better than 15 hrs drive. and since I went to buffalo for college, i am familiar with the road way. oopss…i just remembered driving interstate 90 during a winter storm. scary.

anyway, we were originally supposed to be back nyc on saturday night. but due to the unexpected side trips that we took because of the hurricane, we arrived NYC in the wee hours of tuesday morning.

oh what a trip.
